Unwavering Support for Israel

Gathering storm clouds hover ominously over Israel as long-standing enemies unify around its destruction. Iran continues to deny the Holocaust while planning another one. As Egypt, Libya, Syria, Turkey, and other Middle Eastern nations become increasingly hostile to the Jewish state, heightened tensions push Israeli leaders for a permanent solution to their border problem. U.S. leaders, once unequivocally linked to the Jewish state, now chase after a more balanced diplomacy while increasing pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu to trade land for peace with the Palestinian Authority. Here in America once rock solid support for Israel continues to erode as another generation, largely removed from church, finds no secular reason worthy enough to back our longtime ally. An increasing number of people just want the Jews to go away.

We must continue supporting Israel. Our fortunes are directly linked. Our enemies largely the same. Withdrawing support from Israel will not remove our own present danger. Those who advocate taking no side in the ongoing conflict view this through the wrong prism. The people who want to annihilate Israel also want to destroy us. They will not stop just because we ignore them. They are at war with us right now. They actively seek out ways to terrorize and kill us. We are left with no choice but to stay vigilant and on the offense. The Bible's unequivocal stand in favor of Israel implores all of us to stand with His people when they are threatened.

God speaks about the Jewish nation in Genesis 12:3,

"I will bless those who bless you,
And whoever curses you I will curse;
And all peoples on earth
Will be blessed through you.”

I do not pretend to know God’s mind as to the specifics of how this verse plays out on the world stage. I do not ascribe any particular natural or economic disaster as being of God or from God. I do believe His words are true and we ignore them at our own peril. His words remain authoritative regardless of the timetable and manner in which they are fulfilled. A general principle remains: those who side with God's people will be blessed in some manner while those who curse (abandon) His people will suffer consequences. Nothing will crumble our nation faster than sitting on the sidelines while Israel’s enemies flank them on all sides.

I know the Israeli government and its people are not perfect; we should not assume they are right on every issue. We need to champion human rights all around the world including to the Palestinian people. God loves everyone even those who do not accept His message or extend His love. This does not mean He tolerates wickedness forever. His justice is doled out in due time. His patience remains long suffering but not infinite.

Over the past few years I’ve been following one of my favorite authors, Joel Rosenberg, as he seeks to bless the citizens of Israel with badly needed humanitarian relief. Mr. Rosenberg’s team focuses not just on poor and needy Jews, but also Muslims and Christians in the epicenter of battle. I encourage you to check out his web page at www.joshuafund.net and consider donating if you can. The people of Israel need our support, our love, and our encouragement. Dark days are ahead.
